We have produced hollow carbon fibers from charcoal. The hollow tubes,
or tracheids, in wood tissues are separated by a simple process and used
in the production of hollow fibers.
The raw materials are coniferous trees, such as cedars and cypress. The
tracheid is a hollow tube present in large quantities in the trunks of coniferous
trees, which transfers water from the root to the leaves.
The hollow fibers are at most 3mm in length, the tube diameter is 5-25mm,
the wall thickness is 0.5-3ƒÊm, and contain numerous wall pits characteristic
of the tracheid.
The extracted tracheid fiber is lightweight and has various applications.
